Educate. Exercise. Empower.
Equipoise means the balance of forces, and that balance begins with posture and alignment. When we have pain or tension or decreased range of motion, it can be that tissues are stuck and muscles are out of balance. My goal is to guide you in your work towards achieving better balance in your body so that your muscles work more efficiently to move you and hold you up properly. So that more of you is resisting gravity in a vertical direction. So that your pieces can work more independently instead of in stuck-together chunks.
Here's how I go about it:
Educate: First we assess your current movement patterns so we get an understanding of how you are moving your body. There is often quite a bit of discovery here. We are so used to moving in our bodies that we haven't really examined just how they are doing the amazing things they do for us. Next, using the principles of the Franklin Method, I help you understand how your body is designed to move, and lead you to embody those natural "bone rhythms". You are the only one who knows exactly how your body feels, so we tap into this expertise to develop the best way for you to connect to the information and apply it to your movement experience. It's not just about Mind-Body; it is equally about Body-Mind. We move and feel better when the brain both sends and receives information about your body. As Eric Franklin says, "Better information leads to better navigation". If you become more aware of how you feel in your body, you will be better poised to use it more efficiently and effectively.
Exercise: Our bodies respond to what we ask of them and get very good at what we practice. This can be both a blessing and a curse, however, as slouching in front of a computer is the exercise many of us "practice" most of the day. Our tissues respond by taking that form, resulting in fascial restrictions and muscle imbalances. Katy Bowman notes that "muscles need to be in proper length - via skeletal alignment - to be used." To be used! So, in this example, the lengthened muscles along your back side, and the shortened ones on your front, have become practically unavailable. Have you heard the term "gluteal amnesia"? It's real, and it's a response to the shape you practice. Your body responds to your input. We just need to set things up so the muscles can both shorten and lengthen and you will move better and feel better.
The exercises I will lead you through are designed to mobilize and train your fascia, practice better alignment, and activate muscles to return to a better balance of forces. Here I look to movement and mobilization experts Tom Myers and Jill Miller, in addition to the work of Eric Franklin and Katy Bowman. They are doing great work in the areas of myofascial meridians, mobilization, dynamic alignment and biomechanics, respectively. What I bring to your experience is the synthesis of my studies under each of these experts, and my ability to apply the principles to your unique situation.
Empower: You are your own best expert and advocate. My role is to introduce concepts and exercises, give you some tips and tools (and toys!), guide you through as many practices as you need to feel comfortable with the strategy, and then send you out to take the information, and your new form, into your favorite movement practices.
I look forward to working with you.
